College of Pharmacy Faculty achieves Board Certification in Pharmacy Ambulatory Care

Jordan Sedlacek, PharmD, BCACP

Dr. Jordan Sedlacek, Assistant Professor at Larkin Univserity College of Pharmacy, has successfully completed all requirements to be designated as a specialist in Ambulatory Care by the Board of Pharmacy Specialties (BPS).  To become board certified, specific post-doctoral training requirements must be completed, in Dr. Sedlacek’s case, that was the completion of a PGY1 and PGY2 in Ambulatory Care.  Additionally, all applicants must successfully pass the rigorous BPS board examination in the specific specialty.  The pass rate for the BCACP exam for the past three years is approximately 60%.

According to Board of Pharmacy Specialities, Ambulatory Care Pharmacy addresses the provision of integrated, accessible healthcare services for ambulatory patients in a wide variety of settings, including community pharmacies, clinics and physician offices. The BPS Board Certified Ambulatory Care Pharmacist (BCACP) has the advanced knowledge and expertise to focus on the special needs of patients who may have concurrent illnesses taking multiple medications, and who often administer these drugs themselves or with the assistance of a caregiver at home; provides patient care, developing sustained partnerships with ambulatory patients and practicing in the context of family and community; and integrates care of acute illnesses and exacerbations in the context of chronic conditions.

BCACPs also educate and engage patients in health promotion and wellness; and help to manage patients in between provider visits through treatment assessment, monitoring compliance, refilling prescriptions, and patient education. Currently, there are only 2,700 pharmacists worldwide with BCACP designation and only 131 in the State of Florida.
